Jasmine is a fairly shy, rather quiet, and absolutely beautiful Chinese girl. I met her at one of the thousand nearby Starbucks during my year stay in Ningbo. But, she is also this dormant rebel as I had come to uncover later on. See, Chinese women are very conservative with sexuality. I believe it is part of a deeply rooted culture of male dominance. Nevertheless, we became good friends and she quickly became one of my favorite subjects to photograph. She also really enjoyed being in front of the camera. This is a gift to any photographer.
I was still very new to film photography. However, still wet behind the ears, I wanted to take a crack at the coveted artistic nude portrait genre. Like most of us photographers, I was inspired by the nudes of Helmut Newton. Needless to say, I was nervous, not because of the nudity, but from the fear of not knowing what I was doing. I still get nervous when I shoot nude portraits, even when I photographed Grisel in Polanco. I guess it’s a good thing because I’m forced to perform well.
We shot this series one morning at my apartment which had floor-to-ceiling widows and the light that day was really magical. We were supposed to go out for breakfast, but I couldn’t pass on the opportunity of capturing that great light. The focus was a mix of natural sensuality and raw human nature. It was rather effortless for her because it felt as though she always wanted an outlet to let that inner rebel out. I am glad she did.
